Superior, WI-Darin Meierotto
of Ashland won a hard fought WISSOTA Late Model feature at the
Superior Speedway Friday night as the Speedway opened it's regular
season of weekly racing. A hard charging Steve Laursen of
Cumberland, WI moved from eighth to second but fell just short of
victory in a last corner scramble for the win.
Bill Byholm led from the outside pole early
on but the battle for the win soon came down to a battle between
pole sitter Don Copp, defending track champion Darrell Nelson,
Laursen, Meierotto and Byholm. At the half way point of the caution
free 20 lap event it was Copp, Meierotto, Laursen, Byholm and
Nelson. Copp continued to lead but with six circuits remaining,
Meierotto grabbed the top spot with Laursen taking second. Laursen
was able to mount a charge to the inside but Meierotto fought him
off. On the final lap Copp was running third and tried an outside
move in an effort to steal the win but slid high letting Nelson and
Byholm through into third and fourth leaving him fifth at the
checkered flag. The finishing order was Meierotto, Laursen, Nelson
Byholm and Copp.
Outside pole winner Scott Lawrence of
Superior grabbed the early lead in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature
and was cruising with a ten car length lead when the #77 just died
leaving second running John Copp to inherit the lead. Eleventh
starting Darin Meierotto was on the move from the start and at the
mid point had moved to sixth. Meirotto continued to move forward and
was soon locked in a tight battle with Dale Gangl and a strong
running pole sitter Kelly Checkalski. The three clashed in the
second turn with Checkalski spinning into the path of fifth running
John Hunker. Hunker survived the T-Bone crash but Checkalski was
finished. Copp was able to hold off Meierotto at the line with Gangl,
Bruce Tourville, Paul Berg finishing in the top five. Sixth place
went to defending champion Randy Silverness.
The WISSOTA Modified main event proved to be
a crash fest as seven of the 16 starters were out before a lap was
completed once they settled down, pole sitter Kevin Montieth was on
top and managed to stay there for his first ever feature win at the
Superior Speedway after a number of seasons of competition. At the
half way point Montieth led Dean Yrjanainen, Bob Root, Jason Miller
and Matt Sorenson in the top five. At the checkered flag the front
runners remained the same but Jason Miller had found his way into
the third spot while Bob Root was fourth and Scott Hudack finished
fifth.
Tom Brust completed the sweep of the WISSOTA
Street Stocks by holding off the pack to
the checkered flag. The 15 lap event was
strewn with spinning cars as eleven of sixteen starters finished.
The final laps proved to be exciting as Brust, Tim Baum, Steve
Karshbaum, George Korich, Keith Tourville and Trevor Wilson battleed
back and fourth sometimes three wide two rows deep. It looked as
though Baum was going to steal the win but the jockeying back and
fourth on the final lap left him sixth. Karshbaum prevailed for
second followed by Wilson and Korich.
