BYHOLM BAGS FIRST
CAREER LATE MODEL MAIN

By Jerry O'Brien for superiorspeedway.com
Superior, WI 06-20-03

Glidden Wisconsin 's Bill Byholm topped a strong field of WISSOTA Late Models Friday night at the Superior Speedway.  Byholm, a Modified racing veteran has been racing in the division for only a few seasons without more than a few heat wins.  Starting on the inside of the fifth row, Byholm quickly made his move and with five laps of the 20 circuit feature down, he cracked the top five.

At the green flag it was pole sitter Ed Wakefield bolting into the lead with front row mate Darin Meierotto to second, Don Copp and Kelly Estey in the top five.  Estey got by Copp for second with Kevin Carlson and Jeff Provinzino in the mix.  Meierotto got crossed up and Copp slowed to avoid him.  Both continued but Copp was back to seventh before he could return to speed.  Tim McMann took advantage to grab fourth and Byholm was fifth.

With five laps in Ryan Aho looped in the second turn bringing out the first of three caution periods. At the restart it was Wakefield , Estey, Meierotto, McMann and Byholm.  Meierotto took second as Estey appeared to experience some sort of problem.  McMann, Meierotto, and Byholm sailed by before Estey could resume racing.  With eight laps in, debris in turn four brought out caution flag number two closing up the field.

At the green, Byholm made a strong move from fourth to second, and just past half way took over the point from a slowing Wakefield .  At this point tenth starting Darrell Nelson had worked his way to the top five.  The final caution flag appeared for a Kevin Carlson spin.

When racing resumed, it was Byholm to the lead and the win followed by Meierotto, Nelson, McMann and Copp who had been as far back as ninth but rebounded for a top five finish.

Darin Meierotto started the Super Stock main event from the outside of the front row and worked the high side of the speedway to take the 15 lap main event.  Point leader Dale Gangl raced from the inside of the fourth row to finish second ahead of John Copp, pole sitter Rick Simpson and Scott Lawrence.  The action was marred by three caution flags, the first for a Joe Oliver Spin in turn four, the second, more lengthy stop was for a tangle between Paul Berg and Peter Jokinen.

The final caution period was for a Destin Lorimor spin in turn four.  Oliver was able to rebound to finish 10th while Berg and Jokinen did not finish.  While Meierotto and the top five pulled away the competition from sixth on back was fierce for position.  Meierotto went on to take the win over Gangl, Copp, Simpson, and Lawrence.

Dann Olson of Braham , Minnesota made his second trip to the speedway of the 2003 season worthwhile as he led every lap in the Modified main event from the pole to become the fourth different winner in four races thus far.. Though second row starter Joey Jensen was able to mount a strong charge using the high side, drawing side by side with Olson in the waning laps, he could not muster quite enough to take the lead.

After a big pile up in the fourth turn on lap number one, Olson shot into the lead over Jensen, Darrell Carlson, Wayne Engen and Jeff Hart.  Tommy Turcotte brought out the next caution flag and, at the green flag, Darrell Nelson who had started 14th cracked the top five.  The final caution flag flew for Engen who had spun in turn four.  With five laps remaining Olson hugged the bottom while Jensen tried to make the top work.  Olson hung on for the win over Jensen, Nelson, Carlson and Kelly Estey.

Scott Lawrence, a many time track champion in the street stock division has taken the seat in his old car as driver Scott Herrick has suffered a work related arm injury.   Lawrence took little time regaining his prowess in the car as he won the 15 lap street stock main event. Trevor Wilson rode a lightly smoking number 87 from inside the fourth row to take second while Tom Brust, Marshall Andrews, and Tom O'Brien rounded out the top five.   Lawrence broke Brust's string of wins in heats and features at five for the season.
