DREW, DOAR DRUB JW SUPER STOCK CLASSIC COMPETITION

by Jerry O'Brien
7-4-2003

Superior , WI - Pat Doar won his second straight WISSOTA Late Model feature of the week at the Super Speedway Friday the 4th of July and the "Flyin' Farmer" Don Drew became the third JW Classic Super Stock Champion.

The JW Classic is in remembrance of long time racer and Speedway Race Director Jim JW Zembo who passed away in 2000.  Bruce Tourville, Star Prairie, WI was the first winner in 2001 and Darien Meierotto was the 2002 winner.  With Tourville absent and Meierotto an early feature drop out, there would be a new Classic Champion.

Fifty Super Stocks were on hand and were whittled down to 24 starters for the 30 lap feature through six heats and three B Mains.  The feature event rolled onto the speedway led from the pole by Mike Bellefeuille and Paul Berg.

At the green, second row starter Don Eichens bolted up through to grab the lead off turn four on the initial circuit with Don Drew following him through from the third row.  Bellefeuille followed in third with Berg and Scott Zitelman trailing.  Sam Skalsky move to fifth as Zitelman began to slide back to an eventual 22nd place finish. Eichens had four car lengths on Drew with six laps in while Danny Thomas was on the move from the outside of the fifth row using the middle of the track grabbing the fourth spot.

With seven laps in the first of two caution flags flew when Curt Meyers spun in turn one collecting Paul Berg.  At the green with Eischens out to a short lead Bellefeuille dived to the inside of Drew to battle wheel to wheel for second with Thomas fourth and Sam Skalsky fifth.  Dale Gangl was in the mix battling with Ryan Rivord for sixth while Brian Mikkonen was up from the 17th starting slot to seventh.

Back up front Thomas took to the high side and slid into third.  At the 15 lap mark it was Eichens, Drew, Thomas, Bellefeuille and Skalsky but before lap 16 could be completed Brandon Jensen spun in turn four bringing out the final caution flag.

At the restart Eischens and Drew pulled away slightly from Thomas who was dealing with Bellefeuille and Skalsky.  Skalsky was running very well and slipped past both Bellefeuille and Thomas into third.  Further back, Joe Oliver was moving forward on the high side to seventh while Gangl moved up to battle with Bellefeuille for fifth.

With five laps to the checkered flag it was a two horse race with Drew drawing up to Eischens' bumper. With two to go Drew got a run underneath Eischens and pushed his way past into the lead and the win.  Eischens, Sklasky, Thomas and Bellefeuille finished in the top five.  Drew's last lap pass was good for a $3000 payday.

The other feature event of the night was the WISSOTA Late Model feature.  Led onto the track surface by Brady Smith, the field took the green for the 20 lap distance with pole sitter Brady Smith quickly to the lead.  Darrell nelson, Todd Gehl, Tyler Keyser and Nick Nelson the early top five.

On the move from the outside of the third row was Pat Doar in quest of his second feature win in a week at the Speedway who wasted little time slip-sliding into the lead over Keyser, Smith, Harry Hanson and Tom Waseleski already up to fifth from the sixth row.

At the ten lap mark Doar continued to lead over Keyser, Smith, Hanson, Waseleski and Darrell Nelson.  The race went 19 laps before the only caution flag for a Trent Follmer spin in turn one setting up a shootout for the $1300 payday.  Doar was equal to the task and skated away for the win over Keyser, Smith, Waseleski and Hanson.
