KEYSER WINS FIRST LM MAIN IN SUPERIOR
OPENER
By Jerry O'Brien 5-14-04
For opening night at the Superior Speedway Friday the pits were
jam-packed with cars, due in part to weather related
cancellations at other tracks around the area. A total of 96
cars packed the pits to do battle before a near capacity
crowd.
The late model event featured 20 nearly non stop laps of action.
At the green pole sitter Tyler Keyser shot into the lead followed by
Rick Hanestad and took a long lead. A quarter of the way into
the event the only caution flag of the event flew for Kevin Mudrak
who rolled to a halt on the front stretch with a dead battery.
Back under green Darin Meierotto got a jump on Eric Pember for third
and Keyser fought off a brief challenge by Hanestad and pulled away
to his first career WISSOTA Late Model feature win in his sophomore
season.
The Super Stock feature saw five caution flags in it's 15 lap
distance. Joe Oliver drew the pole and shot into a lead which he
maintained for the first three circuits before Paul Berg spun on the
front stretch bringing out the caution flag. When racing resumed,
Randy Silverness staked his claim on the lead, and on a restart with
12 to go, John Copp grabbed third.
A couple of laps later after a nasty wreck in turn three
eliminated the cars of Nick Musel, Scott Lawrence and Al Uotinen,
Oliver dropped from competition in a shower of sparks from a broken
fly wheel moving Kevin Adams to second. Silverness pulled away
by several car lengths until the caution flag
once again appeared for debris on the track.
Over the final four laps Copp overtook Adams as
Silverness survived two more caution stops and held
off Copp for the win.
The WISSOTA Modified 15 lap feature saw pole sitter Bill Byholm
take the point over Jeff Lien. With four laps complete the
first of two caution flags flew when Eric Bjorkland and Jeff
Pohjonen tangled in the first corner. At the green Lien
entered the first turn too hot, drifted high and fell back to
seventh which moved Darrell Carlson into second. With five
laps remaining Darrell Nelson Flew around Scott Hudack for third and
stole second from Carlson following Byholm to the checkered flag.
In the street stock feature Don Velleux and lou Andrews battled
for the lead until Velleux spun and collected Scott Herrick.
At the restart, 2003 track champ Keith Tourville took the lead but
Tom O'Brien dived to the inside and claimed the point moving out to
a five car-length lead. The caution flew when mike Kalkbrenner
and Herrick tangled and spun, but O'Brien maintained the lead and at
the green, resisted pressure from Tourville through another caution
period for a Shane Kisling spin to take the only sweep of the night.
