FIRST CAREER LATE MODEL WIN FOR FOLLMER
Elk River Racer Tops Stellar Field
Aho New JW Zembo Classic Champion
By
Jerry O'Brien 7-2-04

Trent Follmer of Elk River topped a tough field of WISSOTA Late Models Friday night at the Superior Speedway for his first career feature win in the division. Darrell Nelson shot into the lead from the outside of the front row at the start of the 20 lap main event with Jeff Broking, and Eric Pember close behind.  Follmer soon appeared in a battle for third from his sixth starting spot getting by Brady Smith in the early going. Pember grabbed the lead with Smith second and Follmer third as Nelson and Broking battled for fourth. Some contact was made between the two with Broking spinning into the first turn wall at the half way point.

At the green it was Pember, Follmer, Nelson, Smith, Pat Doar and Joel Cryderman up from 11th. Follmer got a good run off turn two, drew alongside Pember and swept past for the lead off turn four.  Smith also had a good run and took second and tried to track down Follmer. Steve Laursen broke into the top ten from the 19th starting spot and was in eighth. The final caution flag appeared with four circuits remaining when Pat Doar made a rare mistake and spun in turn one.  Follmer fended off several tries by Smith to wrest the lead away to take the win. Pember got by Smith at the flag for second with Darin Meierotto and Nelson finishing in the top five.

Kelly Estey of Kelly Lake won his second consecutive Modified Main event in a run away over Jay McDonald and Dean Yrjanainen. At the green flag Dann Olson shot to the lead off turn two from the second row but Estey who started seventh soon worked his way past Olson and began expanding his lead. The first and only caution of the event occurred when Michael Hinsberger spun in turn one. With 11 of 15 laps remaining Estey led Olson, McDonald, Don Copp, and Pember. Olson faltered a bit in turn two slipping back to fifth as Yrjanainen and Clint Larson made their way into the front runners. Larson had started 13th and was in fourth when problems struck and he pulled into the pits. Estey checked out on the field for an easy win over McDonald, Yrjanainen, Craig Thatcher and Olson in the front five finishers.

It was the 4th annual JW Zembo Super Stock Classic named for the late Speedway Race Director Jim Zembo. This time the winner would take home $1000 for the 20 lap feature win. Ryan Aho took the Lead from the pole but a Keith Kern Spin in turn one sent the field back to a complete restart. Aho wasted little time grabbing the point over Kyle Peterlin, Brandon Jensen, Rick Rivord and John Hunker. Rivord took the third spot but the action was slowed for what would prove to be the final time for an Adam Long spin across the back stretch. With 17 circuits still to go, Aho again drove away from the battle behind as Jason McFadden joined Peterlin, and Rivord in a three wide battle for second. Moving into contention was Hunker and Scott Lawrence. Lawrence moved to fourth with Rivord securing fifth. Aho had a huge lead and prevailed at the checkered flag over McFadden, Hunker, Lawrence and Darin Meierotto up to fifth from the fifth row.

Veteran driver Butch Madsen made the trip up from Rice Lake , WI worthwhile as he squeezed by Shane Kisling in the late going to win the WISSOTA Street Stock 15 lap feature. Randy Vezina took the early lead with Kisling and Madsen following closely. Kisling took the top spot by lap three with Vezina, Madsen, Marshall Andrews and Scott Herrick trailing. The first of three action stoppages occurred when Mike Kalkbrenner spun in turn one. At the green the only change in the front runners was Herrick's annexation of third. The caution again appeared when Riley Matthews was turned around on the back stretch. Madsen took advantage of the restart to force his way past Kisling entering turn one and weathered the final caution period for a three car tangle in turn one to take the win. Kisling, Andrews, Herrick and defending track champion Keith Tourville rounded out the top five.
