UOTINEN GETS FIRST CAREER SUPER STOCK WIN
Marshall Andrews Wins Third Street Stock Feature
By Jerry O'Brien 7-16-04

Tim McMann found his way back to the winner's circle as he won the hotly contested WISSOTA Late Model feature, his first of the season. Starting from the outside of the second row, McMann hung around in the top five as Todd Gehl played hare to the hounds from the start in the 20 lap main event. Gehl started along side McMann on the inside of the second row and wasted little time taking the lead from pole sitter Justin Fegers and Bob Reed. Gehl extended his lead as McMann and Reed dueled for second.  Fegers jumped over the cushion and recovered from the slip in sixth.  McMann took second and set out to track down Gehl who was running on the edge high on the track on the cushion. Said cushion gave Gehl some bad moments and each time McMann drew a little closer. On the final circuit it looked as though Gehl had his first win of the season in the bag but the fourth turn burned him again and McMann dived to the inside in a drag race to the checkered flag which he won by about four feet over Gehl. Reed, Darrell Nelson, last week's winner Bill Byholm and Tom Nesbitt finished in the top five.

The WISSOTA Modified 15 lap feature started 24 cars, but only 14 cars finished due to a 13 car pile up on the front stretch that on the second lap saw last week's winner Jayme Lautigar get turned sideway and rolled over. None of the drivers involved were injured and five of the 13 involved were out of the event. Kelly Estey was judged to have started the mele and was sent to the rear.

Clint Larson started on the pole and led a couple of circuits as he and Dann Olson appeared to plan to settle it between them as they pulled away from the field. The big wreck happened behind them and, at the green flag, Larson still held the lead but slipped over the cushion and recovered in fifth. The slide for Larson continued but he was able to bring it back to ninth. Olson held a big lead over Steve Arpin, Jodi Olson and Darrell Carlson. Olson's big lead evaporated when Dennis Checkalski spun in turn four after the right rear tire went flat. At the Green Olson went back to the upper groove as Jodi Olson stuck to the bottom. It was a battle of the Olsons as Jodi took the point, Dann Olson got it back and it looked as though Dann Olson would be the winner. But a caution flag needed to be thrown on the white flag lap when Matt Sorenson's power plant erupted in a cloud of smoke and fire down the front straight. This set up a two lap dash to the checkered flag with Jodi Olson taking the win in his first appearance of the season at the speedway. Dann Olson, Steve Arpin, Darrell Carlson and Jeff Lien finished in the top five.

The Super Stock feature saw Al Uotinen win his first main event since taking the wheel of the Rick Milinkovich owned number 47 a year ago. Uotinen started from the pole with Randy Silverness to the outside. Many would try but none could wrest the lead away from Uotinen as he led flag to flag. Three caution flags slowed the action as several drivers turned in stellar runs from deep in the field including first time visitor Cory Karshbaum and Scott Lawrence who started in the 11th row and worked their way forward with Karshbaum apparently finishing fifth and Lawrence sixth. Post race weigh in disqualified Karshbaum when he came up light moving Lawrence to fifth. Ryan Aho tried to make it back to back feature wins but came up one position short finishing second while youthful Kyle Peterlin made a fine drive from the fourth row to finish third. Fourth place finisher John Hunker started outside the sixth row and was in contention quickly to finish fourth.

Marshall Andrews won his third feature of the season at the Speedway to retain his point lead in the WISSOTA Street Stock standings. It was his fourth over all feature victory this season. Andrews started on the pole for the 15 lap feature and cruised to the win. He survived two caution periods to take the win over defending track champion Keith Tourville, Tom O'Brien, Trevor Wilson and newcomer Drew Sauer.
