CAPTURE SUPERIOR SPEEDWAY SPECIAL
By Jerry O'Brien
7-18-04
An even one hundred cars in four divisions competed in the first
Super Stock, Midwest Modified, Street Stock and Pure Stock special
at the Superior Speedway Monday July 19th. The number included 27
Pure Stocks in their first ever visit to the fast 4/10ths mile
banked oval, 23 Midwest Modifieds, also in their first visit to the
speedway since the now defunct Race of Champions several years ago.
Also the Super Stocks brought 29 and the Street Stocks had 21.
Rob Monahan last won a feature at the speedway back
in 1996 in a Street Stock and found his way back to victory lane
this time in a pure stock.
Starting from the outside of the front row Monahan
battled early on with Tim Carlson who took the early
advantage. The two looked as though they would settle the deal
by themselves as they pulled away from the pack. Dan Kingsley gave
everyone a scare when he suffered a flat left rear tire sending
those around him scrambling as he fought for control. There was no
caution flag as Kingsley made it off the speedway without serious
contact. Carlson had three car lengths on Monahan when a caution
flag, the only one of the 15 lap event for debris, slowed the
action.
At the green flag Monahan got the jump on Carlson
who was overwhelmed by the pack as he got a bad start. Shortly
thereafter his stout run ended in the infield. Monahan cruised away
to take the win as the second place battle featured some four wide
action. Monahan went on to take the win over a fast moving Andrew
Jarvi who came from 15th to take second. Steve Young, Miles Weske
and Scott Larsen finished in the top five.
Veteran driver Butch Madsen won his second feature of the season
at the Speedway taking the lead early on in
the 15 lap feature. Trevor Wilson led the first circuit from the
outside of the front row with Madsen quickly up to second from row
two. Also in the mix were Jim Gullikson, Marshall Andrews and pole
sitter Riley Matthews. Madsen took the point on the fourth circuit
with Jim Gullikson and Andrews trailing. Entering the top five were
Shane Kisling and Dan Gullikson with Tom O'Brien just outside the
top five in sixth. O'Brien brought out the caution with an assisted
spin in turn four with Randy Vezina charged. At the green Madsen
accelerated away from Jim Gullikson but they were stacking them up
on the back stretch and the caution lights were on again. With eight
laps to go Madsen led Jim Gullikson, Andrews, Kisling and Dan
Gullikson. A lap later Jamie Olson would bring out the caution for
the last time with an solo spin in the first turn. The final five
laps were a scramble with Madsen leading to the checkered flag over
Jim Gullikson, Andrews, Dan Gullikson and O'Brien who secured fifth
place in the waning laps.
After pole sitter Brad Anderson enjoyed a brief
stint at the head of the field, his front row mate Kelly
Checkalski assumed command and fought off a last lap charge by Mark
Anderson to take his first career win at the speedway. Checkalski
led Dean Hoffman, Tim Seircks, Mark Anderson and Justin Jones in the
early going and had little trouble staying out front.
A caution flag for a two car tangle in turn
one closed the field to Checkalski's bumper but he was able to
maintain the point on the restart. Checkalski appeared to be tapped
by Siercks, but when Siercks checked up he was hit from behind and
spun sideways in front of the pack setting off a 14 car pile up and
causing a red flag stoppage. During this massive tangle Loren Inman
Jr and Justin Jones both rolled their mounts. Neither was injured
and six cars were unable to continue. With an even dozen cars left
and six laps to go as officials cut the distance by five laps due to
time constraints, Checkalski maintained the lead but the spinning
was not finished as Dean Hoffman looped himself out of third place.
At the green, Checkalski fought off a charge by Mark Anderson and
won his first feature at the speedway. Anderson settled for second
with survivors Nick Lavato, Brad Anderson and Jeremy Hall finishing
in the top five.
Ryan Aho drew the pole for the Super Stock feature
but it would be Darin Meierotto who took home the first place cash.
Aho took the lead at the outset with Scott Lawrence following him
through from the second row into the number two spot. Meierotto,
Adam Hensel and Randy Silverness followed. Lawrence's car jumped
sideways in turn four bringing out the caution flag. He and Hensel
headed to the work area and rejoined the race at the rear. At the
green Meierotto charged past Aho into the lead and never looked
back. Aho fell to Dale Gangl who slipped into second while John
Hunker and Ryan Rivord were in the front five. Also charging toward
the lead was Al Uotinen who started seventh and charged past Rivord
and Hunker into third. The final caution period was caused by a Doug
Woodhull solo spin in turn one. Meierotto held off Gangl for the win
with Uotinen, Aho and Hunker behind.
