McMANN NAILS SECOND STRAIGHT LATE MODEL FEATURE
Madsen Wins Third Street Stock Main

By Jerry O'Brien

Tim McMann took his second straight WISSOTA Late Model feature event Friday night August sixth at the Superior Speedway. The popular veteran driver redrew the pole position for the 20 lap event. But it was second year driver Andrew McKay who got the hole shot off the front row to take the early lead. With a single circuit in the books, rookie Late Model driver Aaron Lillo spun in turn two bringing out the caution flag. McKay still maintained the point at the green with McMann, and Todd Gehl trailing. Again the caution flag appeared as Jeff Broking spun off turn four. When the second lap was finally completed, Mc Mann grabbed the lead from McKay and was able to stay in front despite another caution before half way by Kelly Estey in turn two.

Point leader Darrell Nelson then made his presence felt racing up from his inside third row spot to take second. Duane Mahder joined Nelson also from the third row and the three leaders pulled away from McKay and Bill Byholm as the front running trio gaine three quarters of a straight away on the third place battle. Byholm got by McKay for fourth in the closing laps. McMann had little trouble staying ahead of Nelson who suddenly had to worry about losing second to Mahder. The three crossed the line in that order with Byholm and McKay finishing off the top five.

Only two stoppages marred the competitive WISSOTA Modified feature won by Darrell Nelson. At the green flag start of the 15 lap event Nelson overtook pole sitter Dennis Checkalski with Cory Jorgenson third, Jodi Olson fourth and Jayme Lautigar fifth in his first race back since his roll over in the midst of a 13 car pileup a few weeks ago. The first of the two caution flags appeared when Don Copp spun in turn four and was sent to the rear. Nelson led at the green and Olson got by Checkalski for second as Dann Olson appeared in fifth up from the 11th starting slot. At the half way point it was Nelson, Olson, Checkalski, Jorgenson and Scott Hudack in the top five with Dann Olson, Lautigar, Clint Larson, Jeff Pohjonen and Kelly Estey running in the top ten. The final caution flag flew for Darrell Carlson who lost power and stopped in turn one with five to go. Nelson went on to take the win over J Olson, Checkalski, Hudack and Al Uotinen in fifth up from 17th.

New Brothers-in-law Randy Silverness and Joe Oliver started on the front row for the 15 lap WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Silverness took the early lead but Oliver shot by on the outside to take the spot. It was three wide for third momentarily behind the leaders with five laps down. Defending point champion Dale Gangl moved quickly forward from the seventh position and took second from Silverness. With eight laps to go the first of two caution flags flew when Keith Kern spun in turn two. Oliver led Silverness again with Gangl on the prowl in third over Kyle Peterlin and a fast moving Darin Meierotto. Gangl took second and nipped Oliver at the line for the lead with six laps to go. Oliver lost control momentarily in turn two and lost several spots but what would prove to be the final caution flag flew which gave Oliver back the lead. Gangl worked his way by and was off toward the checkered flag. It was a tight battle for second with Peterlin taking the spot over Oliver, Meierotto and point leader Ryan Aho who came from 16th to round out the top five.

Veteran driver Butch Madsen won his third WISSOTA Street Stock feature of the season in a duel with Tom O'Brien in the late stages of the 15 lap feature. O'Brien drew the pole position but Madsen quickly moved to the number two spot from the second row. Three caution flags slowed the action including one for point leader Marshall Andrews who had to rebound from the back of the pack to finish fourth. Newcomer Bret Schmidt survived to finish third while Shane Kisling also survived two incidents to round out the top five. Madsen pulled away from O'Brien in the late stages to take the win.

The Pure stocks were invited back for another race at the speedway and Tim Carlson of Superior won his second feature of his career leading from  the outside of the front row all 15  circuits. Glen Dammer made a great drive through the 20 car field from 19th to second ahead of rookie driver Tim Donaldson, Al Rapp and Andy Jarvi.
