BRADY SMITH SNARES LATE MODEL WIN
Madsen Now Five For Six In Street Stocks
By Jerry O'Brien

Brady Smith of Solon Springs, WI outlasted a charging Rick Hanestad to nail down the victory in the 25 lap WISSOTA Late Model feature. Starting in the second row, Smith took advantage of pole sitter Andrew McKay's mistake on the first lap. When McKay spun in front of the field in turn one, Smith inherited the pole position when the inside line moved up one position. The caution flag was not finished waving as the usually steady Late Models had difficulty in completing the first circuit. After an incident involving Kelly Estey and Roger Paolo in one, the restart saw Smith get a good jump on front row mate Steve Laursen. Laursen jumped the cushion in turn one, hit the wall and ground to a halt with several others caught up in the incident including the hapless Mckay and Jeff Provinzino. Provinzino and Laursen were done for the event. At the green flag Smith and Bill Byholm who had benefitted from Laursen's misfortune, led the remaining cars into turn one with Smith gaining the lead. Jeff Broking got a great run off the second turn to battle Byholm for the second spot with Darrell Nelson and Tom Nesbitt trailing. Smith was riding the rim up near the wall and pulling away from the pack but the fastest car on the track belonged to Rick Hanestad who was on the move from the fourth row picking them off one by one. Smith soon encountered lapped traffic enabling Hanestad to make up a lot of ground. Smith continued in the high groove while Hanestad found the low side to his liking and was able to pull alongside Smith. On the final circuit Smith pulled ahead of Hanestad on the back stretch and dived to the inside stealing his line for the win. Moving forward from the sixth row was Trent Follmer who finished third ahead of Nelson and Nesbitt.

Darrell Nelson won his third straight WISSOTA Modified feature outdistancing Kelly Estey in what has become a classic duel between the two veterans. Dean Yrjanainen led early from the outside of the front row in the 20 lap event that was slowed by a number of caution flags. It took a couple of tries to get rolling as two quick caution flags slowed the action. Each time Yrjanainen was able to maintain the lead but Nelson was on the move from the second row and managed to complete the pass after trying to steal the lead on the restarts. Jodi Olson, Darrell Carlson, Estey and Al Uotinen were all in contention for the entire distance. Nelson took the win after a final yellow flag, with Estey, Olson, Uotinen and Yrjanainen in the top five.

Defending WISSOTA Super Stock track champion Dale Gangl gained some ground on current point leader Ryan Aho as he held him off to the checkered flag for the win in the 20 lap feature. John Hunker led from the front row in the early going but eighth starting Gangl worked his way forward into the lead despite a late race caution flag that set  up a three lap scramble to the checkered flag. Aho and Hunker finished second and third while seventh starting Ryan Rivord finished fourth and tenth  starting Kyle Peterlin rounded out the top five.

Butch Madsen has only raced at the speedway six times this season but Friday night took home his fifth feature win to lead all divisions. Madsen's draw/redraw luck was phenomenal as he drew the pole for his heat which he won, then redrew the pole for the feature taking the lead at the initial green and went on to take the win surviving challenges throughout by Ryan Viltz and Riley Matthews. Matthews got by Viltz, the other heat winner, in the late going to finish second. Viltz hung on to third while Scott Herrick and defending track champion Keith Tourville rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were on hand for their second visit of the season with Mark Anderson of Atkin, MN sweeping the heat and feature. The 12 lap main event proved to be a most difficult one as two red flags flew for rollovers. The first was right off the bat when the two front row starters Brad Anderson and Kelly Checkalski got together in the first turn with both spinning. Ken Thompson following behind got squeezed into the wall and rolled over without physical injury. Both Thompson and Anderson were out of the event. Greg Chesley led early but Mark Anderson grabbed the point followed by Chesley, Checkalski Deven Van House and Mike Kalkbrenner. Shawn Van Guilder spun to the top of turn one and Chesley slid into him and turned over. Chesley was uninjured but done for the evening. Anderson went on to the victory over Van House, Checkalski, Kalkbrenner and Brock McCarthy, the only cars running at the checkered flag.
