Casey & Cryderman Team Up For Super Late Model Feature Wins

Gangl Pulls Off Last Lap Pass For Super Stock Thriller

On an absolutely perfect night for auto racing, the Superior Speedway kicked off it’s 4th night of action of the 2006 racing season with a full program of DTRA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds plus twin 25-lap DTRA Late Model features on Domino’s Pizza night at Wisconsin’s Fastest 3/8 mile red clay oval. Arnie Ranta Motorsports teammates Joel Cryderman and Terry Casey raced to $1,600 paydays in the Late Model division tonight, Casey’s first ever win at the speedway and Cryderman’s first in three seasons in Superior . Dean Yrjanainen stormed away with the Modified feature win, while Dale Gangl thrilled the crowd with a last corner pass for the Super Stock checkered. Nick Lavato claimed his second straight Midwest Modified feature win, while Butch Madsen got into victory lane for the first time in the Street Stock division.

The first feature to roll out onto the race track was the first twin 25 lap Late Model feature, which saw Joel Cryderman and Nick Musel pace the field to the green. Trent Follmer was scheduled to roll off on the front row, but after getting upside down earlier in the week, the #31t was not able to compete tonight, which handed the front row to Musel. Cryderman took off into the lead and drove away from the early battle for second. Brent Larson and Musel ran side by side early on for second, while Joel drove off into the night. Meanwhile, Darrell Nelson and Steve Laursen were storming through the field from 10th and 14th respectively and appeared in the top five near the mid-point of the event. Cryderman continued his comfortable advantage and raced to his first feature win at the speedway in nearly three seasons. Laursen had his best run of the season, charging through traffic and slipping by Brent Larson’s #b1 for second late in the going. Larson came home in third with Nelson fourth and Terry Casey rounded out the top five after starting 6th. Cryderman’s win was not an easy one however, as he suffered a distributor failure in hot laps and had to scramble to replace it prior to rolling onto the track for the make up feature.

The Super Stocks were up next with Rick Simpson and first time visitor Tim Johnson sharing the front row. After 5 cautions in the first 5 laps, the action heated up and straightened out with Dale Gangl and Johnson running side by side for most of the 20-lap event for the lead. Johnson took off into the lead early on, but Gangl reeled him in and began to put pressure on the 1jr over the second half of the event. Jeff Tardy ran third most of the event and began to reel in the leaders, while Scott Lawrence and Mike Bellefeuille raced from 8th and 10th respectively into 4th and 5th at the finish. Johnson continued to use the outside momentum to his advantage and lead lap after lap with Gangl 1 car length behind until the white flag flew. Gangl got a great run off of turn two and completed the pass with a slide job as the field raced out of turn 4 for the checkered flag, picking up the thrilling win in front of the packed grandstand. Johnson settled for second with Tardy, Lawrence and Bellefeuille rounding out the top five.

Scott Hudack and Brad Hanson lead the field of Modifieds to the green with Hanson immediately racing to the lead on the outside of the speedway and driving away from the field. Dean Yrjanainen got into second early and then stole the lead from Hanson on lap five on the low side of the speedway and tried to drive off. The battle on the track was for second between Joey Jensen, Hanson and 6th starting Jayme Lautigar. Lautigar was storming to the front on the outside of the speedway and moved into a battle with Jensen for second. Kelly Estey, after starting fifth, got back into the action and moved in on Hanson for third as well, while Yrjanainen continued to drive off from the field. Contact occurred between Jensen and Lautigar on lap 8, sending Lautigar into the fence and ending his great run. On the restart, Estey moved in on Jensen now for second, while Dean drove off again for his first win of the season. Jensen held off Estey for second with Bill Byholm coming from 10th to 4th and Hanson rounding out the top five.

The second Late Model feature rolled out onto the race track with Kelly Estey and Terry Casey setting the pace. After a lap one caution, Casey jumped into the lead with Pat Doar coming with him into second early on. Casey and Doar began to drive off into the night, while Joel Cryderman, winner of the first feature, was making his way forward after starting 10th on the field. The race ran non-stop the final 24 circuits with Doar looking to the inside of Casey on multiple occasions for the lead, but Casey was up to the challenge and held off the charges of Doar over and over. The lead duo continued to battle hard for the lead through lapped traffic, while Cryderman moved into third and began to reel in the leaders. Doar continued to dog Casey, but Terry was strong and raced to his first ever feature win in Superior . Doar raced to a solid second with Cryderman, Bill Byholm and Estey rounding out the top five.

Butch Madsen overhauled pole sitter Scott Herrick on lap 2 in the Street Stock feature and lead the non-stop main event for the remaining 14 circuits to claim the easy feature win. Mark Froelich charged from the 5th row to second, while Herrick, Shane Kisling and Marshall Andrews raced into the top five. Madsen cruised to the feature win, his first of the season here at the speedway. Froelich had a great run to finish second with Herrick in third.

Nick Lavato bolted into the lead from the outside of the front row and raced hard with Jeff Pohjonen for the lead throughout much of the main event. A handful of caution periods bunched up the field, but Lavato was strong enough to drive back off into the lead on each restart. 11th starter Greg Chesley raced into second and looked as if he may be able to move in on Lavato to battle for the lead, only to have a transmission failure end his good run. Lavato raced to his second consecutive feature win with Pohjonen coming home in second. Willy Thompson raced in third much of the event and held off Rod Hietala for third at the line.

Superior Speedway kicks back into action on Friday, June 9th with a full program for DTRA Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Pure Stocks and twin 15-lap Street Stock features.
