Smart Stands Tall In Only 2nd Career
Superior
Feature Victory
The Superior Speedway welcomed the World Dirt
Racing League Super Late Model Series to town for it’s first of
two visits of the season and saw a near repeat of a year ago, with
Justin Fegers racing to the $5,000 payday, just as he did in June of
’05. Butch Madsen raced to his
fourth Street
Stock feature win in a row, while Tom Smart made a very rare visit
to victory lane in his Midwest Modified and Don Copp got his first
feature win of the season in defense of his 2005 Modified track
title in
Superior
.
Butch Madsen had won the three previous DTRA
sanctioned Street Stock features at the Superior Speedway and redrew
the pole tonight, with his fourth win in a row in sight. Madsen
bolted from the pole and took off into the lead with Scott Herrick
and Shane Kisling close in tow. Madsen held the top spot while
Kisling and Herrick were in a great battle for second close behind.
Meanwhile, Randy Vezina was running the extreme top side of the
speedway, working his way from the back to 4th and
putting his #5r into contention for the win. Madsen was not to be
denied however, as he held off a furious challenge from Herrick in
the late stages of the event for his fourth straight Street Stock
feature win at the speedway with Herrick, Kisling, Vezina and Dan
Kingsley rounding out the top five finishers.
Tom Smart and Nick Lavato jumped into a great
battle for the lead at the start of the Midwest Modified main event,
which would last for the entire event. Smart, who started on the
pole, did a great job holding off 4th starting Lavato for
most of the event and even on the restart after a 6 minute red flag
period after a hard crash in turn 2, Smart again took back off into
the top spot with Lavato in close tow. Lavato finally worked under
Smart on the 13th circuit of the 15-lap event for the
lead, however the car of Shane Roy was directly in front of the
leaders as they ran nearly side by side through the turns on the
final circuit. Contact was made between Lavato and Roy, sending
Roy
around, holding up Lavato and allowing Smart to race by for his
first win in
Superior
in many years with his #61 machine. Jesse Ogston had a career-best
second place finish in his rookie season with Jeff Pohjonen rounding
out the top three. Another rookie, Chais Eliason also had a career
best finish in fourth with Wayne Engen coming home in fifth.
Shawn Polonoski and Don Copp paced the field to
the green flag for the Modified main event with Copp shooting into
the lead at the drop of the green and bolting away from the field
early on. Copp began to stretch his advantage while 8th
starting Darrell Nelson was working his way up into third by midrace.
Nelson went to work on Polonoski for second while Brandon Jensen,
piloting John Carpenter’s #9 again tonight was running in a tight
battle with Kelly Estey for fourth. Copp survived three caution
periods to race to his first feature win in
Superior
in defense of his 2005 track title, while Nelson had to settle for
second. Polonoski ran third with Jensen and Estey rounding out the
top five finishers.
Superior Speedway kicks back into action on
Friday, June 23rd with a full program for DTRA Late
Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks and Midwest Modifieds
