Repeat Winners Steal Headlines At Kid’s Night in
Superior
All 5 DTRA feature winners that graced the Arnie Ranta
Motorsports Winner’s Circle on Friday, July 7th were
repeat winners at the track in 2006. Dan Wheeler won on opening
night and stormed to his second win of the season on kid’s night
in the Midwest Modified division, while Butch Madsen raced to his 5th
DTRA Street Stock feature win in 7 tries. Terry Casey raced to his
third DTRA feature win in
Superior
in the Late Model division, while Ryan Aho racked up his 4th
Superior Super Stock feature win of the season and Darrell Nelson
became the first Modified driver to win multiple features in the
ultra-competitive division at the track so far in 2006.
The first feature onto the track on Kid’s Night was the
Midwest Modifieds and saw Wayne Engen and Tom O’Brien pace the
field to the green flag. Engen took off into the lead in search of
his second consecutive feature win at the track and looked like he
may indeed drive off into the night until mechanical troubles struck
him on lap 5, which ended his run and handed the lead over to Dan
Wheeler. Once out front, Wheeler was not to be denied his second win
of the season in
Superior
as he cruised to the win while Nick Lavato tried to track him down.
Lavato was forced to settle for second with 12th starting
and first time visitor Andy Jones coming across the line in third,
ahead of O’Brien and Jesse Ogston in fifth.
Ryan Aho drew the pole and drove off immediately at the drop
of the green to his 4th feature win at the track in 2006.
Aho was the class of the field tonight, while Mike Bellefeuille came
from 10th to second and on a late race restart looked
under Aho for the lead, but Aho was not to be denied and drove off
again for the win. Bellefeuille raced to second with Dale Gangl in
third, Mike Loomis in fourth and 13th starting Sam
Skalsky crossing the line in 5th.
Dean Yrjanainen took the lead from Cory Jorgenson at the
start of the Modified feature event, but after an early race
restart, Darrell Nelson stole the top spot and drove off into the
lead, leaving the best battle on the track for second between Joey
Jensen and Al Uotinen. Nelson stretched his lead at the half way
point, while Jensen and Yrjanainen continued to battle for second
for most of the remaining laps in the 20-lap event. Nelson raced to
an uncontested feature win to become the first repeat feature winner
in the Modified division in
Superior
this season. Jensen held off Yrjanainen for second with Brent Larson
and Kelly Estey rounding out the top five finishers.
Joey Jensen got the jump on fellow front row starter Kelly
Estey at the start of the Late Model feature and tried to run away
from the field, but 6th starting Terry Casey, 4th
starting Steve Laursen, along with Estey were up to the challenge
and were battling for the lead with Jensen’s Q machine. Casey took
advantage of a lap 10 restart to storm by Jensen into the lead and
proceeded to drive away from the field for the remaining 15 laps en
route to his third Superior Speedway feature win of the season.
Jensen held off Laursen for second with Pat Doar sneaking by Estey
to fourth at the line.
Randy Vezina, Tim Baum and 5th starting Butch
Madsen assumed a great battle for the lead at the start of the
Street Stock main event, but several caution flags slowed the action
early on. Once back underway Madsen drove to the front and to the
lead and off to his 5th feature win of the season in only
7 starts. Madsen walked away from the field yet again, while Scott
Herrick and Mike Kalkbrenner waged a great battle for second.
Herrick backed up last week’s feature win with a second place run
ahead of Kalkbrenner, Mark Froelich and Tim Baum.
Superior Speedway kicks back into action on Friday, July 14th
with a regular racing event featuring DTRA Late Models, Modifieds,
