Flyin’
Fynn Flies To First Super Stock Feature Win
Doar
& Herrick Race To Second Wins Of The Season
In
Superior
The story of the
night was that Modified ace Dean Yrjanainen had never sat in a Super
Stock before and went on to lead every lap and outrun defending
track champion Ryan Aho for his first Super Stock win in his engine
builder’s new Gator Chassis. Pat Doar ran away with the Late Model
feature win, while Darrell Nelson stormed from 12th to
win his third Mod main of the season in
Superior
. Scott Herrick ran off with his second Street Stock feature win of
the season and Tom Morinville continued the defense of his Pure
Stock track title with his first
Superior
win of ’06 as well.
The first feature onto the track was the DTRA Street Stocks
and after pole sitter Mark Froelich suffered a flat tire on the
opening lap, Scott Herrick assumed the lead and assumed command,
never to be challenged up front on his way to his second Street
Stock feature win of the season in
Superior
. Herrick lead all 15 laps in the 6-minute, non-stop Street event
with Mike Kalkbrenner trying to keep Herrick within striking
distance up front. Kalkbrenner was able to work on Herrick a little
for the lead, but Herrick held strong and raced to the win with
Kalkbrenner in second at the line. Shane Kisling, Keith Trouville
and 5-time winner Butch Madsen rounded out the top five finishers.
Ryan Aho started on the pole for the second consecutive week
in the Super Stock main event, but first time Super Stock pilot Dean
Yrjanainen started along side Aho and got the jump in his engine
builder Shawn Anderson’s gator chassis. Yrjanainen took off into
the lead at the start of the 20-lapper while Joe Oliver moved in to
battle with Aho for second. Aho secured second again from Oliver and
tried to work back on Yrjanainen, but Dean was very strong out
front. Yrjanainen went on to his first career Super Stock feature
win in the first time he had ever sat in a Super, while Aho held off
furious challenges from Jeff Tardy and Scott Lawrence for second.
Oliver held fifth at the line as well.
Brent Larson and Don Copp paced the field to the green for
the Modified feature event, but all eyes were on 12th
starting Darrell Nelson. Nelson had been red hot lately in his #44
and tonight was no exception. Copp and Larson battled side by side
for the lead over the first few circuits, while Nelson was storming
through the field and cracked the top five near the midpoint of the
event. Larson assumed command up front while Copp, Joey Jesen and
Billy Byholm were in a great battle for second. Larson drove off
into the night and looked to have his second Mod win of the season
in
Superior
, until a caution flew on lap 17, setting up a three-lap dash to the
finish. On the restart, Nelson dove to the inside of Copp and Larson
and slid up in front of Brent to steal the lead with only 2 laps
remaining. Jensen also slid to the inside of Larson on the
backstretch to take over second, which he held to the checkered.
Nelson raced to his third Mod feature win of the season in Superior
in dramatic fashion with Jensen, Larson, Copp and Dean Yrjanainen
rounding out the top five at the line.
Pat Doar made the long overnight trip from
South Dakota
pay off as he started on the pole and ran away with the 25-lap Late
Model feature for his second $1,500 paycheck of the season in
Superior
. Doar ran away from the field, while Eric Breeschoten slipped by
Brent Larson into second and tried to track down Doar, but to no
avail. Doar made a mockery of the feature event and won by a
straightaway over Breeschoten, Larson, Kelly Estey and Darrell
Nelson.
Defending track champion Tom Morinville started on the pole
and lead every lap en route to his first feature win of the season
in
Superior
. Morinville and Rick Kesty battled early on for the lead, but Kesty
suffered a flat tire, allowing Morinville to drive off into the
night. 11th starting Andrew Jarvi was making his way
through traffic and moved in on Morinville late in the going, but
Tom was up to the challenge and held strong to pick up the win by a
car length over the charging Jarvi. Tony Ciurleo ran a strong third
with Glenn Dammer and Dan Larson rounding out the top five
finishers.
Superior Speedway kicks back into action on Friday, July 21st
with a special Head of the Lakes Fair racing event featuring DTRA
