Laursen's Last Lap Pass
Steals SummerFest LM Title
Madsen Dominates 7th Street Stock Main Of '06
- 7/24/06
The Superior Speedway held it's annual Superior SummerFest on
Monday, July 24th in conjunction with the Head of the Lakes Fair
under hot and sunny skies and saw Steve Laursen steal the lead and
the win from Darin Meierotto with just one lap to go to capture the
Late Model crown at the SummerFest. Jodi Olson raced to his first
Superior Speedway feature win in the Modifieds after a thrilling
race-long battle. Mike Bellefeuille ran away with his second feature
win of the season in the Super Stocks, while Dan Wheeler raced to
his third Superior feature win in the Midwest Modifieds and Butch
Madsen continued his domination of the Street Stock class with his
7th Superior feature win of the season.
The Street Stocks were the first feature onto the track and saw
Dan Kingsley jump out into the early lead, while 6 time feature
winner Butch Madsen rolled off in 5th. Madsen quickly jumped into
third, while Kingsley drove off and away from the field. Kingsley
survived two caution periords, which bunched up the field, but
Madsen was able to work his way under Kingsley into the lead with 4
laps remaining. Once Madsen stole the lead, he stretched it out and
raced to his 7th Superior Speedway feature win of the season in the
Street Stock class and extended his DTRA National points lead in the
process. Kingsley ran a career-best second with Tim Baum, Scott
Herrick and Mike Kalkbrenner rounding out the top five finishers.
Chris Gorka and Rick Simpson lead the Super Stock field to the
green flag, but 6th starting Mike Bellefeuille quickly bolted to the
outside of both front row starters and stole the lead on lap 2.
Bellefeuille got the lead and drove off into the night, while 12th
starting Ryan Aho zoomed into third early on in the event and went
to work on Gorka for second. Scott Lawrence moved into fourth early
on as well and he and Aho both snuck by Gorka into second in third
and tried to chase down Bellefeuille. After a late race restart,
Bellefeuille ran away from the field again, but broke a right front
ball joint on the final lap, which hampered the efforts of the #21
car and allowed Aho to close in quickly on the final circuit.
Bellefeuille was able to hang on for the win with Aho, Lawrence,
Mike Loomis and Dale Gangl coming across the line in the top 5.
Kelly Checkalski jumped out front in the Modified main event and
lead the first 7 circuits until Jodi Olson and Jason Miller both
moved in on Kelly's 'H' car in a thrilling 3-car battle for the
lead. As the battle for the lead waged on, Joey Jensen and Don Copp
moved in to make this awesome battle a 5-car one at the 1/2 way
point of the event. After a lap 10 caution, Olson and Miller resumed
their killer battle for the lead until Miller lost control briefly
and ended his great run. Olson then was forced to contend with Copp
over the final few circuits as the duo ran side by side for the lead
on the final lap. Olson was able to withstand Copp's challenge and
race to his first DTRA feature win ahead of Copp, 12th starting
Darrell Nelson, 16th starting Brent Larson and Checkalski.
Darin Meierotto and Jeff Provinzino, drinving John Carpenter's
car, paced the DTRA Late Model feature field to the green, which saw
Meierotto bolt away from the field into a sizeable advantage, while
Provinzino was foced to battle with Steve Laursen, John Kaanta and
Harry Hanson early on. The final caution flew just at the 1/2 way
point, bunching up the field one final time, but Meierotto was up to
the challenge and drove away again from the field. Laursen and
Provinzino continued their battle for second, while Kaanta,
Hanson and Pat Doar were all engaged in a great battle for 4th
throughout the second 1/2 of the event. With just 2 laps to go,
Laursen dove to the bottom of the track and swept by
Meierotto into the lead to steal the impressive win. Provinzino
snuck by Meierotto into second at the line as well with Meierotto in
third, Doar in fourth and Kaanta in fifth.
Dan Wheeler bolted off the pole to take command and
dominate the Midwest Modified feature event. Jeff Pohjonen
moved in to battle Wheeler for the lead briefly on a lap 4
restart, but Wheeler was up to the challenge and drove back off
into the lead for his 3rd Superior Speedway feature win chased by
Pohjonen, Tom Smart, Jeff Marshall and Greg Chesley in the top
5.
The Superior Speedway will be off on Friday, July 28th,
but will kick back into action on Friday, August 4th with a
full program for DTRA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Pure
Stocks and the Northern Vintage Stock Cars. For more
