Nelson
Dominates Modified Main For 4th
Superior
Victory Of ‘06
Aho,
Herrick &
Lavato Grace Victory Lane
Again In
Superior
The annual visit
by the Northern Vintage Stock Car Racing Association saw Kevin
Lipsky of New Richmond, Wisconsin reach victory lane, along with
Darrell Nelson’s 4th
Superior
win of the season in the Modifieds. Ryan Aho worked hard for his 6th
Superior Speedway win of the season in the Super Stocks, while Scott
Herrick and Nick Lavato won the Street Stocks and Midwest Modifieds
respectively for the third time each this season.
Kevin Lipsky
raced from the 8th starting position to outrun Dennis
Olson to pick up the victory in the Northern Vintage Stock Car
Racing Association event tonight at the speedway. Olson and Marv
Sayre tried to reel in Lipsky, but Kevin was on his game and raced
to the victory.
Scott Herrick took off from the pole in the Street Stock
feature event and tried to run away from the field early on. A lap 1
caution saw 7 time feature winner Butch Madsen suffer a flat tire
and head to the work area for a new Goodyear Eagle. The green flag
flew over the field with Madsen ˝ lap behind on the start after
getting out of the work area just as the green flew. Herrick now had
his hands full with Mark Froelich in a battle for the lead, while
Mike Kalkbrenner, Dan Kingsley and Shane Kisling all battle right
behind the leaders. A mid-race caution bunched up the field, but
Herrick drove back off into the lead and raced to his
third Street
Stock feature win of the season ahead of Froelich, Kalkbrenner,
Kisling and Madsen, who rallied from the tail of the field.
Teammates Deven VanHouse and Wayne Engen paced the field the
the green in the Midwest Modified feature with Engen taking off into
the night early on. Engen looked strong out front, while 7th
starting Nick Lavato was working his way through traffic on the low
side of the speedway. Lavato and Tom Smart were battling for third
on lap 3, while Engen continued to lead out front. Lavato stole
second on lap 5 and then tracked down Engen and began a battle for
the lead on lap 9. Lavato stole the top spot with 5 laps remaining
and raced away from the field for the win. Engen settled for second
with Tom O’Brien in third, Jim Schweitzer in fourth and Smart
rounding out the top five in the non-stop main event.
Randy Silverness Jr. took off into the lead at the start of
the Super Stock feature, but the main event was quickly red flagged
due to a grinding crash on the front straightaway between Keith Kern
and Tom Treviranus. Treviranus needed to be cut out of his #31 and
transported to the local hospital but indications are that he is
doing fine after the hard wreck. On the restart, Silverness again
took off into the lead, while Ryan Aho and Mike Loomis embarked on a
thrilling battle for second. Loomis cleared Aho and moved in on
Silverness for the lead on lap 7. Loomis stole the lead on lap 11
after a great side by side battle and started to move away from the
field. Aho slipped by Silverness into second on lap 12 and quickly
moved in on Loomis and began to battle for the lead. Loomis and Aho
swapped the lead on several occasions, but Aho was able to steal it
and secure the lead with three circuits remaining. Aho raced to
another feature win with Loomis in second. Scott Lawrence and Tim
Borgeson both charged through the field and finished third and
fourth after starting 16th and 18th
respectively. Silverness capped off a fifth place finish at the line
as well.
Just like the start of the Super Stock feature, a grinding
crash on the first lap of the Modified feature slowed the action and
eliminated a few cars before the race really got going. Erik
Bjorklund took the lead from the outside of the front row, but his
distributor broke as he raced in front of the field, causing a
collision on the front straightaway, triggering a nasty wreck
between Jason Miller, Darrell Nelson, Jeff Spacek and Rick Friendt.
Friendt, Spacek and Bjorklund were eliminated from competition. On
the restart, Nelson took off into the lead and left nothing to the
imagination as the drove away quickly and dominated the Mod main.
Jason Miller ran a solid second, but had nothing for Nelson tonight
as Darrell was the class of the field tonight en route to his 4th
feature win of the season in
Superior
. Billy Byholm snuck by Al Uotinen for third and held off Al at the
line, while Duane Dale rounded out the top five.
