The final
regular season event held at the Superior Speedway during the
’06 racing season saw several familiar and several first
time feature winners grace the Arnie Ranta Motorsports
Winner’s Circle at the high banked 3/8 mile red clay oval,
while everyone in attendance dodged the looming rain showers
in the area to get our entire program in before the storm him
minutes after the conclusion of the racing program. Pat Doar
and Darrell Nelson continued their hot streaks winning the
DTRA Late Models and DTRA Modifieds respectively, while Darin
Meierotto made only his third start of the season behind the
wheel of a DTRA Super Stock and raced to the feature win. Dan
Wheeler continued to dominate the DTRA Midwest Modified
division in
Superior
, while Shawn Kammerud raced to his first career Superior
Speedway feature win in the DTRA Street Stock division
tonight.
Shawn
Kammerud made a rare visit to the Superior Speedway pay off as
he bolted from the pole at the start of the DTRA Street Stock
feature event and never looked back. The non-stop 15-lapper
saw Kammerud drive off into the night, while a great
three-wide battle raged on behind him for second. Mike
Kalkbrenner, Shane Kisling and Scott Herrick were three-wide
for second for a number of laps before Kalkbrenner was able to
squeeze ahead into second and try to chase down Kammerud.
Kalkbrenner was able to cut into Kammerud’s advantage, but
Shawn was not going to be denied his first ever Superior
Speedway feature win tonight and held strong to the checkered
to claim the win. Kalkbrenner ran second with Kisling edging
Herrick for third at the line.
Darin Meierotto swept into the lead at the start of the
Super Stock feature from inside of the second row and took
command while Destin Lorimor settled into second at the start.
After the only caution of the event bunched up the field,
Meierotto again drove away, while Lorimor and Mike Loomis were
giving chase on the low side. Scott Lawrence, Ryan Aho, Dale
Gangl and Mike Bellefeuille jumped to the high groove and
began to march toward the front, but Meierotto was very strong
down low. Darin drove off in the Rick and Mona Milinkovich
owned #47 car and raced to the victory, while Lormior capped
his best career run in
Superior
in second. Loomis ran third with
Lawrence
and Aho trailing.
Kelly Estey jumped from the pole into the lead at the
start of the Modified main event, while Joey Jensen, Billy
Byholm and Ron Schreiner raced 3-wide for second early on. An
early crash stacked up the field once again and saw Darrell
Nelson scream to the outside of Schreiner into second and then
to the outside of Estey to the lead on lap 6. Once Nelson was
out front he drove off, but Jensen came back to life and began
to challenge Estey for second throughout the mid-point of the
event. Estey and Jensen ran side by side for a few circuits
while Nelson drove away for his 4th Superior
Speedway feature win of the season. Jensen was able to secure
second from Estey on the final lap, while Schreiner beat Don
Copp to the line for fourth.
The 25-lap Late Model main had it’s share of problems
tonight with 6 caution flags and numerous issues from the
start. When the action was underway it was a great feature
race, which saw Pat Doar take the lead on the opening lap from
Harry Hanson and lead from start to finish for his 4th
Superior win of the season. While Doar was running all alone
out front, Hanson, Steve Laursen, Terry Casey and Tom Nesbitt
were putting on a great show for second. Darin Meierotto and
Eric Breeschoten moved into the mix as well, but no one had
anything for the double one express tonight as Doar cruised to
the win. Hanson held second at the white flag, but Laursen
tried to pull off a slide job, only to have Hanson out drag
race him to the line for second. Nesbitt and Casey crossed for
fourth in a near photo-finish with Nesbitt declared fourth
officially.
Dan Wheeler has been in victory lane nearly every time
he has visited the Superior Speedway in 2006 and tonight was
no exception. Wheeler raced from 5th to the lead in
6 laps and put his red1 car into victory lane ahead of a
charging Jimmy Latvala and Nick Lavato tonight. Latvala capped
off a great night with a second place run, while Lavato’s
third place run nearly clinched the track title for him with
only one night remaining. Shawn Phillips ran fourth and Wayne
Engen rounded out the top five finishers tonight.
The Superior Speedway kicks back into action with one
of its biggest shows of the season on Tuesday, August 22nd
with the Superior FallFest for the DTRA Late Models, plus the
first
Superior
stop for the Como Oil & Propane Modified Series, season
championship night for the DTRA Midwest Modifieds and a
regular program for the Superior Pure Stocks.
