Win Make Up Features

It was a perfect night for racing
at the Superior Speedway Friday night, fair skies
and warm temperatures, something that his region has
seen little of this spring. A good crowd of fans
filed into the speedway to watch 106 race teams do
battle on the big clay oval. Racing action started
early as two of the rained out feature events from
June first were run at 6:30 prior to the beginning
of the scheduled program.
First up was the Modified make up
feature Duane Dale took the early lead with Jayme
Lautigar challenging. Kelly Estey squeezed between
them at the end of the first of 20 laps and took the
lead. In the early going it was Estey, Dale,
Lautigar, Ross Lightner and Don Copp but Dale tried
the high side for the lead and spun turn four and
was clipped by Bill Byholm. Both were able to
continue. On the single file restart Lautigar made
the high groove work and swept into the lead which
he would not relinquish to the checkered flag. Estey
finished second, Copp third, Lightner fourth and
Erik Bjorkland rounded out the top five.
Brent Larson shot off the pole to
the lead in the Late Model make up feature with
Kelly Estey, Pat Doar, Darin Meierotto and Joel
Cryderman trailing. Larson dominated the 20 lap
event putting a 15 car lengfth lead on Estey. At the
half way point Larson led Estey, Doar, and Meierotto
who had Steve Laursen challenging for fifth. The
event went flag to flag with no cautions as Larson
got his second feature win of the season at the
speedway. Doar, Estey, Cryderman and Laursen
finished in the top five.
The first feature of the regular
program was for the Midwest Modifieds. There was a
multi-car crash on lap one at the rear of the pack
that sidelined three of the 24 car field. Chesley
took the lead at the start and never looked back as
he romped to his third feature win of the season at
the speedway. Chesley took over the top spot after
the first lap accident over Al McDougall, Skeeter
Estey, Deven VanHouse and Rod Hietala. Estey got by
McDougall and closed up on Chesley as the two raced
away from third place by several car lengths. At the
mid point Chesley led Estey, Hietala, Willy Thompson
and McDougall, but a lap later the caution flag
appeared for Chais Eliason who's car was leaking
fluid onto the track. With seven laps remaining in
the 15 lap event, Chesley drove away from Estey on
the restart with Hietala third and Nick Lavato up
from the fifth row into fourth. Chesley raced off to
a huge lead as Estey began to drop back as Hietala
and Lavato got by him. Several cars were able to
advance to the front including Cory Jorgenson who
moved from the ninth row to finish seventh, and
Loren Inman who battled for sixth spot for several
laps after starting 12th but had to settle for tenth
in the end.
Everyone was on the edge of their
seats hoping that the Super Stocks could break their
jinx of having numerous accidents and shortened
features. At the green flag pole sitter Jim Campbell
took the point with mike Bellefeuille and Ryan Aho
hot on his heels. Ther was a caution period on lap
four when Campbell, who was working the high groove
on the now tacky and smooth racing surface, spun in
turn four. That left the lead to Bellefeuille with
Aho on his bumper. The restart was called off when
Alan Hartel's car stalled while trying to enter the
pits. Bellefeuille went to the high side for the
lead when racing resumed and at the same time Scott
Lawrence who restarted fourth went to the pit with a
flat tire. Bellefeuille and Aho went side by sode
for the lead with Bellefeuille holding onto the lead
as they raced away from Donnie Lofdahl in third. A
battle for third involved Lofdahl, Keith Kern, Brian
Mikkonen and J B Stortz as they swapped positions
almost every lap. At the half way point Bellefeuille
led Aho, Mikkonen, Lofdahl, Stortz and Joe Oliver
who had come from row five to run sixth. The fourth
place skirmish intensified with Kern, Lofdahl and
Stortz three wide for the position. They were soon
joined by Oliver and 15th starting Tom Treviranus
and the five cars put on an astounding race for the
fourth spot. Bellefeuille won his first of the
season at the speedway over Aho, Mikkonen, Stortz
and Treviranus.
Darrell Nelson raced off into a
different zip code as he dominated the Modified
feature. Starting from the inside of the
second row, Nelson wasted little time taking the
lead from Ross Lightner with Jody Bellefeuille, Dean
Yrjanainen and Kelly Estey following. There was an
early caution flag when Kelly Checkalski slid up
into the third turn wall. Nelson jumped to the lead
at the green flag over Bellefeuille with Lightner,
Yrjanainen and Estey in the top five. Nelson and
Bellefeuille pulled away from Lightner who soon
relinquished third to a charging Jason Miller who
had started tenth. At the half way point Nelson and
Bellefeuille were several car lengths ahead of
Miller while Joey Jensen war moving quickly forward
to take over fourth with eight laps remaining.
Miller vaulted to second and tried to track down
Nelson but ran out of laps. Nelson took the
win over Miller, Jensen, Estey, Bellefeuille and Jad
Carlson in the top five.
Defending track champion Butch
Madsen who has not raced at the speedway for a
couple of weeks showed the way in the 15 lap Street
Stock feature. Madsen jumped out to the lead from
the front row and outran a persistent point leader
Shane Kisling for the win. One caution flag marred
the run when Bobby LePage was apparently spun out by
Rob Weber. On the restart Kisling was literally on
Madsen's bumper, they played bumper tag into the
first turn but Madsen pulled away for the win. Scott
Herrick, Dan Kingsley and Don Craig rounded out the
top five.
Ron Schreiner had the pole for
the 25 lap Late Model feature and at the green flag
got the hole shot on front row mate Aaron Lillo with
Joel Cryderman right behind. Cryderman moved up and
he and Schreiner went wheel to wheel for the lead
while Lillo and Brent Larson battled for third while
Mike Nutzmann and Kelly Estey were going at it for
fourth. On lap five Cryderman secured the lead and
began to pull away but the caution flag flew next
time by for Nutzmann who spun in turn two. At the
restart it was Cryderman leading Schreiner with
Larson in third, Estey fourth and Lillo fifth.
Cryderman proceeded to drive away from Schreiner but
the lead was short lived as the caution flag again
appeared for the car of Gregg Hill. This time Larson
used a strong restart to get by Schreiner and set
out after Cryderman. Estey ran fourth and appearing
in the top five was a hard charging Steve Laursen
from his ninth starting spot. Schreiner slipped back
to fifth with Eric Breeschoten sixth. Also charging
forward was Harry Hanson who was now in seventh from
his 20th starting slot. Cryderman chose to use the
high groove momentum forcing Larson to use the low
side to try for the pass.
At the half way point Cryderman
led Larson with Estey, Laursen and Pat Doar who had
dropped back early but had rebounded to fifth at
this point. Schreiner, Breeschoten, Hanson, Lillo
and Caley Emerson ran in the top ten. Cryderman
began lapping the field with Larson following
closely and, with five laps remaining he was able to
hold back Larson in traffic. With four laps
remaining the caution flag flew when Joey Ogston and
Darin Meierotto collided and Meierotto stopped
against the back stretch wall. The incident set up a
four lap shootout with no lapped cars in front of
Cryderman and Larson. At the green flag Cryderman
still had the line around the track that Larson
needed and led the final circuits for the win,
Larson, Estey, Laurson and Doar were the top five at
the finish.
