June 26th, 2009 RACE RESULTS

Over 80 cars showed up on a beautiful night for racing Friday night at the Superior Speedway on a night sponsored by Whelen Engineering.

The Late Model feature looked like Pat Doar was going to run away with things and led from the 1st lap but on the final lap of the 22 lap race Doar lost his drive shaft on the back stretch giving Rick Hanestad from Boyceville his first ever feature win at the Superior Speedway.  Joel Cryderman from Thunder Bay took 2nd followed by Harry Hanson, Brent Larson and Todd Gehl.   In the heat races Travis Budisalovich from Cottage Grove won his first heat race of the year and so did Cryderman in the other heat race.  Don Copp who finished in 6th extended his consecutive feature laps to 326.

The Modified feature went to Pat Doar from New Richmond.  But the show was put on by Jason Miller from Oceola who was put to the back of the pack after spinning out between turns 3 and 4 on the lap one.  Miller worked his way through the whole pack and finished in 2nd and would have challenged Doar for the lead if the race would have lasted a couple more laps.  Also, a great run for Jody Bellefeuille from Duluth who finished 3rd and was edged for that position by Miller at the finish line.  Al Uotinen from Superior finished in 4th followed by Bill Byholm.  On the night Greg Chesley from Duluth, who is in his first full year of racing Modifieds, extended his consecutive feature laps completed to 120.  Doar did complete the sweep as he won his heat race earlier in the night.  The other feature was won by Bellefeuille.

Dave Flynn of Superior jumped out to a big lead on the first lap of the Super Stock feature race and looked like he was going to cruise to his 3rd feature win of the season but Steve Rivord spun out on lap 5 and brought Flynn back to the rest of the drivers and they took advantage with Mike Bellefeuille from Duluth finally getting the lead on lap 10 and he held off the rest of the pack to win the 18 lap race.  Keith Kern was coming on strong and looked to challenge for the lead but hit the wall coming out of turn 4 on the final lap and didn’t complete the race.  Bellefeuille said in victory lane after the race, “There are a great bunch of racers in this class and makes for great competition every night.”  Scott Lawrence of Superior won the first heat race of the night and Flynn won the other.  Lawrence also extended his consecutive laps completed in feature races to 220 and Jim Campbell from Two Harbors extended his streak to 150 laps.

The Midwest Modifieds started the night with some great heat races.  In the first heat it was Jeremy Houle, the current points leader, who had to hold off Taylor Leuthner from Foxboro to win the first heat.  The 2nd heat had Scott Herrick picking up from where he left off the week before when he won his first feature in a Midwest Modified as he won the race followed by Jeff Pohjonen and Dan Russell.  And heat race number three was won by Randy Silverness Jr. from Superior after a number of re-starts and a roll over by Jesse Ogston.  Willie Thompson from Eveleth made his first appearance of the season and finished 2nd after being put to the back of the pack on the first lap for jumping the start.  In the feature it was Leuthner who jumped out the early lead but it was Houle who got passed him on turns 3 and 4 on the 6th lap of the race. Houle who won the opening night feature has finished in the top 5 in 5 out of the last 6 races he has raced in Superior.  Skeeter Estey who started in the fifth row moved his way all the way up to 2nd he was followed by Deven VanHouse from Silver Bay, who also started on the 5th row. Herrick finished 4th followed by Cody Wolkowski from Thunder Bay.  Silverness extended his completed laps completed in a feature to 205, Herrick is also at 205 with Lance Solem extending his streak to 200 laps.

The Pure Stock feature race was undecided until the very end with a number of cars in the chase and it was finally won by Tom Cornelison Jr. from Holyoke who won by just inches over Dan Larsen from Hermantown.  Cornelison took the lead on lap 6 after a restart that was caused by a rollover by Ashley Smith.  Smith had to scramble to get her car put back together after an accident the week before.  With 3 laps to go Larsen took the lead and looked like he was going to cruise to another feature win but it was Cornelison that edged him at the finish line to complete the sweep as he won his heat race earlier in the night.  Cornelison who bought the car from Chad Carlson was racing in the Pure Stock division for only the 2nd week in 2009.  Richard Dezlak Jr. finised in third followed by Pat Van Ert and Matt Hammitt.  In the other twp heat races the winners were Paul Gucinski from Britt and Larsen.  VanErt extended his consecutive laps completed in feature races to 202, Austin Bloom to 140, Larsen to 118 and Dezlak to 106.
